Piano Tuning Frequently Asked Questions

As a piano tuner, we encounter many various questions from piano owners. Below are some frequently asked questions and answers:

How often should i have my piano tuned?

A piano should be tuned every six months to achieve its optimal performance. At minimum pianos, pianos should be tuned at least once a year to maintain pitch and tone. However, more frequent tuning may be necessary if the piano is exposed to significant temperature and humidity fluctuations or if it’s used extensively.

What is the cost of piano tuning?

The cost of our piano tuning service is $220.00, including GST. If your piano has not been tuned for a long time, for example, greater than 1 year, your piano might need more extensive tuning, like a pitch raise.

Can you fix stuck or broken piano keys during tuning?

Yes we can. We offer a full range of piano repair services. While our piano tuning services primarily focus on pitch adjustment, we will address simple issues like stuck or noisy keys.

How long does a piano tuning session usually take?

A typical piano tuning session will be for one to two hours. We do not rush, and tune your piano with thoroughness and care. Tuning may take longer depending on the condition of the piano and the extent of the tuning required.

Do I need to prepare my piano before the tuner arrives?

It’s helpful to keep the piano in a stable environment of temperature and humidity before the tuner arrives. Clear any objects from the top of the piano, and make sure there is good lighting in the room.

Can I play the piano immediately after it's been tuned?

Yes, we encourage you to play the piano right after it’s been tuned. In fact, it’s a good practice to play the piano immediately to help settle the strings into their newly tuned positions.

What is the difference between tuning and voicing a piano?

Tuning involves adjusting the pitch of the piano’s strings to achieve the correct musical intervals. Voicing, on the other hand, is the process of adjusting the tone or timbre of the piano by modifying the hammers and felts to produce a more desirable sound.

Can you tune a piano that hasn't been tuned in years?

Yes, we can and often to tune pianos that haven’t been tuned for several years. However multiple services may be required to stabilize the pitch. The piano may also need additional maintenance or repairs.

What is the ideal humidity level for a piano?

The ideal humidity level for a piano is around 40-50%. It is more important to maintain consistent humidity levels, as this prevents the piano’s soundboard and wooden components from expanding or contracting, which can affect tuning stability.

Do you provide other piano services besides tuning?

Yes, as an experienced piano technician, in addition to piano tuning we provide: pitch raises, piano repair, piano restoration, piano voicing, piano regulation and cleaning services.
